This is Only Temporary
My current body of work stems from society’s overwhelming desire to preserve the past. Perhaps it is because we feel in part responsible by our actions that we attempt to preserve the remaining artifacts and relics that we have left. By collecting discarded photographs that belonged to friends, family and even strangers, I amassed a small collection of history. Despite its small size, it still had a solid connection to a time and place in our lives; one that many of us had felt the need to capture. This is futile however, because once we exert ourselves trying to preserve these memories, it is those moments in particular that will fade the fastest.
By crystalizing the physical photographs gathered from the family album, these set a reminder for us to be weary of our reliance on the digital age. There is also a sense of irony that by putting an aesthetic value to these precious captures of time, these seemingly useless photographs have once again regained their value to us as an object of desire. This is Only Temporary is neither an archive nor is it a fleeting moment, but rather a raw example of the impact of our personal memories that become conflicted with our contemporary culture.
